Faulkner County basketball teams opened state tournament play Wednesday with mixed results.

At Magnet Cove, Heather Moix scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the St. Joseph girls built a 28-10 halftime lead on the way to a 57-40 victory over Carlisle in the 2A East Regional.

Megan Briggler added 17 poins. Rachel Briggler had seven points and five assists. Courtney Briggler had six points and six rebounds. Anna Mayor had six points. Jennifer Hegeman added five assists.

The Lady Bulldogs (24-9), who earned a state berth at Cedar Rige with the victory, will play either Magnet Cove or Augusta in Friday’s semifinals.

"The girls played well and I’m proud of the effort to qualify for state," said St. Joseph coach Chris Kordsmeier. "But we want to advance in the regional. We did a good job on defense and were balanced on offense."

Harding Academy’s girls eliminated Mayflower, 48-30. in the 2-3A regional at Bald Knob.

In the Class 1-3A regional at Stephens, Sparkman defeated Mount Vernon-Enola, 68-54, in boys action.

MV-Enola’s girls defeated Sparkman, 70-56, to move into Friday’s semifinals. The Lady Warhawks qualified for the Class A state tournament at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.
