The Old Conway Preservation Society and the Faulkner County Historical Society are sponsoring an art competition for Faulkner County students in Kindergarten – 12th grade for the seventh year.

This year’s focus will be the architecture of residential and commercial buildings built in Faulkner County before 1961.

Purpose:

The purpose of the competition is to instill a love and respect for the cultural and historic heritage of Faulkner County in our children. The competition has been designed with the Arkansas Department of Education Fine Arts Framework in mind and competition guidelines have been established.

Contest Rules:

•All entries must be original works created without aid from others.

•Elementary and intermediate school (grades K-6) students’ art work should be 12"x18" in size in order to fit within the matting provided for winning works at the exhibit for this age category. Anything larger must be matted by the individual for the exhibit if it is chosen as a winning piece.

•It is desirable that Junior and senior high school (grades 7-12) students’ art work be no larger than 16" X 20". Students at this level must provide their own mat board and cardboard or foam board backing for their work for exhibition. Matting must be white.

•Entries must be 2-dimensional freehand works drawn on paper or canvas using traditional medium (pencil, crayon, paint, colored pencils, pastels, pen and ink, etc.)

•Chalk and charcoal works should be sprayed with a fixative before submitting and oil paintings must be dry.

•No 3-dimensional works will be accepted

•Only one entry per student will be accepted.

•All entries must have the following information included displayed on the back: Student’s name, grade, school’s name, teacher’s name, school’s telephone number and the address of the home or building that was drawn or painted.

•Entries lacking complete and legible information or other stated specifications will be disqualified.

•Artwork needs to be placed in a portfolio (can be teacher-made) that allows the works to be secured together for easy transporting and in a method that keeps the pictures from bending. A piece of poster paper folded in half with two sides taped or stapled works well for the elementary level. Wrapping larger matted pieces with bulletin board paper or placing them in a cardboard box is also great. Art needs to be complete and ready for pick up at school locations by April 20th, 2012. Home schooled students may drop off their artwork submissions at Consolidated Financial Services Group, Inc. at 1507 Caldwell Street, Conway, AR (501-329-2054).

•Artwork not selected for exhibition will be returned to the schools by May 11th, 2012.

•Permission slips for the City Hall Exhibit must be secured before art work can be exhibited there.

•Entry in the contest constitutes consent for the artwork to be utilized along with the winners’ names in future editorial, advertising, and publicity mediums.

•Submissions, copyright and reproduction rights become the property of The Old Conway Preservation Society and the Faulkner County Historical Society and may be used by the organizations to create promotional materials and products for sale without restrictions by the artist.

•Artwork will be signed in and out of the school to insure against loss of art works.

Art subject:

Homes or buildings must be at least 50 years old or older (built by 1961) and can be located anywhere within the city of Conway and Faulkner County.

Judging:
