Conway Community Band — 85 musicians strong — will open the Simon Park Concert Series at 7:30 tonight in Downtown Conway.
The theme is "The Sky Above Us," and all music, with the exception of two Sousa marches, will follow the sky theme: "Dominion of the Sky," "Blue Moon" and "Space and Beyond."
Amy Whittenburg will be featured soloist for "Blue Moon."
"The band will boast of a powerful sound that will fill Simon Park and the hearts of those that attend the performance," said Kim Williams, executive director of the Downtown Partnership, sponsor of the concerts.
The band is under the direction of Ricky Brooks from UCA and Tim Cunningham from Conway High School. They said the youngest member of the band is 18; the oldest is 80.
J.D. Cariker of "that1show" will be the master of ceremonies.
The Conway Convention and Visitors Bureau is also a sponsor of the series.
"Bring a lawn chair, a picnic and the family for a concert in the park," Williams said.
