Activities surrounding Memorial Day will take place throughout the holiday weekend, all in an effort to remember why the holiday is celebrated.

Today, flags will be placed on the grave sites of veterans at Oak Grove Cemetery, and the American Legion is looking for volunteers.

On Memorial Day, several ceremonies will be held throughout the county at the different cemeteries. Speakers will be at several of the sites, and Taps will be played at each event. The series of events are a combined effort by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dissabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League and American Legion.

A ceremony at the Oakland Cemetery will begin at 8 a.m. will continue at the Carter Cemetery at 8:30 a.m. At 9 a.m., the ceremony will move to the Old Liberty Cemetery, and the VFW Honor Guard will appear at the Crestwood Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. The speaker there will be Charles Yarbro.

At 11 a.m., Conway Mayor Tab Townsell will speak at Oak Grove Cemetery, and ceremonies are also planned at the Macedonia Cemetery at 1 p.m., the Faulkner County Courthouse at 4 p.m. with guest speaker Linda Tyler and at Copperas Springs in Guy at 6 p.m.
