Gabby Hathaway, an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph High School, is the first in the school’s history to win at the Lions International Peace Poster Contest at the state level.

The Mayflower Lions Club sponsors the contest locally.

Seventeen entries were submitted at St. Joseph, and Gabby’s was chosen by her fellow students to represent the school. The contest is open to 11-13 year olds.

This year’s theme is "Imagine Peace." Gabby’s medium was markers and colored pencils. The posters are judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of theme.

"It came to my mind that all the children of the world could think together of world peace," Gabby said of her idea.

She first won at the district level for which she was awarded $150. The poster then went to state where she won again and was given an additional $100. Her poster now goes to the International judging which will be decided in February. If she wins, she’ll receive $5,000 and a trip to an awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations.
