Mike Winter is the new Conway Fire Chief. Mayor Tab Townsell announced his decision at Tuesday night’s Conway City Council meeting.
Winter, who was one of two local candidates for the position, said waiting for the decision on Monday was one of the few times in his life that he remembers being nervous.
"It’s been a long process, and I agree with the process wholeheartedly, and now that this race is finished I’ve got a sense of both pride and great humility ... and I’m eager to get started," Winter said before the announcement.
Winter was selected at the end of a nationwide search headed by the city’s Fire Chief Search Committee, which was created for the task. The committee gave anonymous opinions and input, but the decision of who to appoint was the mayor’s alone. The other local candidate was Conway Batallion Chief Mark Jones. Joseph Gorman and Jerome Gaines, of the Texas City and Fort Wayne, Ind. fire departments, respectively, were the other two finalists who came to Conway to meet department and city officials and Conway residents.
Winter, 43, started his carreer in firefighting in Conway, and said he plans to end it here.
