A Massachusetts man was charged with sodomizing a 3-year-old child after Faulkner County investigators stumbled upon suspicious internet activity that triggered a federal investigation.
Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Bledsoe said an "unknown person" later identified as 30-year-old Michael McCann of Havenhill, Massachusetts, contacted FCSO online "regarding sexual contact with underage children" in January.
"An undercover FCSO investigator communicated with the suspect who stated he resided in Massachusetts but was interested in traveling to Arkansas for the purpose of sexual contact with an underage child," Bledsoe said.
FCSO contacted the FBI in Little Rock, and from there the case was forwarded to FBI officials in New York and Massachusetts.
"A joint investigation was opened and approximately 48 hours later an arrest warrant/search warrant was served at a residence in Havenhill, Massachusetts," Bledsoe said.
McCann told undercover investigators he had sexual contact with a 3-year-old girl on April 16, stating he "had taken some good pics’" that day. On April 18, he sent photos of himself and the child to investigators.
"McCann told the [FBI Task Force Officer] that he had been able to babysit for a 3 year old child over the weekend, he also stated that she asked him for help washing her face and brushing her teeth," the affidavit filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York reads. "McCann [said] he was not worried about the child telling because she had her eyes closed, and ‘she doesn’t talk that well.’"
Investigators learned the child lived in Herkimer County, New York, and confirmed through the child’s mother that McCann was at her home in Herkimer County over Easter weekend.
"On Monday, April 17, McCann babysat the child for about an hour, but had access to her on the other days as well," the affidavit stated.
The affidavit also notes the 3-year-old girl confirmed to authorities in a forensic interview "that when the defendant helped her brush her teeth he told her to close her eyes, which she did."
"She said that the ‘toothbrush’ used by the defendant was bigger than the one used by her parents, and it hurt her mouth."
McCann was arrested April 24 and charged with sexual exploitation of a child.
"The investigation is ongoing," Bledsoe said.
