Dr. Burvin Carl Alread died Friday, Jan. 21, 2011 at Conway Regional Medical Center, on the one-year anniversary of his beloved wife’s death. He was born in Atkins on Aug. 21, 1925. His family founded the Alread community in Van Buren County in the 1800s.

He was preceded in death by his son George Elton Alread and his loving wife of 56 years, Sue Fulmer Alread. He is survived by his son William and wife Paige of Evergreen, Colo., and two grandchildren, Emilee and Will, who were the joys of his life. He earned his doctorate degree from Hendrix College and spent his professional life teaching economics at both Hendrix College and UCA.

A longtime resident of Conway, he was active in church, community and education activities. He enjoyed reading and traveling the world with his lovely wife Sue and their many friends. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on the official board of trustees.

Outside of family, his true love was gardening which led to his many years of membership with Master Gardeners, where he served as president. One of his greatest joys was sharing flowers and vegetables from his garden with friends and neighbors.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Cemetery, followed by a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Conway, with the Rev. Charles Murray and Dr. Joel Cooper officiating. Roller-McNutt Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First United Methodist Church Food Pantry or the charity of choice.
