GREENBRIER — Weather and travel problems have played havoc with the Battle at the Brier tournament.

The tourney went on as scheduled Thursday with a couple of major changes. Hazen and Bauxite pulled out of the tournament and Sheridan, which was unable to get to the tourney it had originally scheduled, was a late replacement to the field.

Then Little Rock Mills was a no-show for its boys game against Vilonia on Thursday night.

"The Vilonia boys were all dressed out and ready to go and they (the Comets) didn’t show up," said Stephen Wood, Greenbrier’s athletic director. "They didn’t even call us. We had to call them, and they said they couldn’t get a bus so they couldn’t come."

Wood said Charleston, which wanted to send both its boys and girls teams to the tournament, now can do so with the removal of Mills. Charelston’s girls will replace the Greenbrier JV girls and play Searcy at 1 p.m. on Friday, and its boys will play Russellville at 11:30 a.m.

"We were all set to go (Thursday) and Hazen and Bauxite called about 8 Wednesday night and said they couldn’t make it," said Wood. "Fortunately, we were able to add Sheridan, which was looking for a place to play. And our junior varsity girls were available to play."

"We thought about postponing the first day but moving the tourney back would mean we would have to play the finals on New Year’s Eve, and we didn’t want to do that."
