MAGNOLIA — Wonderview’s Lady Daredevils left Guy-Perkins in their tracks at the beginning of each half Tuesday on the way to a 53-30 victory in the first round of the state Class A basketball tournament at Mulerider Gymnasium here.

Wonderview came out firing 3-pointers and took a 16-9 lead at the end of a quarter. The Lady Thunderbirds, led by the scoring of Alexis Hogan, rallied to draw within 22-16 at the half.

The Lady Daredevils, led by Bailey Zimmerman, revved things up at the beginning of the second half and stretched the lead to 33-19 in four minutes.

The third quarter ended with Wonderview comfortably ahead, 42-25, and the Lady Daredevils were not challenged the fourth quarter.
“I knew that the start of the third quarter was really important and we came out firing,” said Wonderview coach Jeff Simon. “And we came out hitting shots. That’s three or four games in a row that the second half has been ours.”

The two teams played an overtime game, in which Wonderview also prevailed, earlier in the season.

The two teams in neighboring counties will be more familiar with each other next season as they will be in the same conference, which is a revival of most of the old 5B-North (Guy-Perkins, Mount Vernon-Enola, Nemo Vista, Sacred Heart and Wonderview) plus some private schools in Little Rock and North Little Rock.

“It’s going to be a really good basketball conference and I’m excited about that,” said Guy coach John Hutchcraft.
