HOT SPRINGS — Conway’s Jimmal Burgess stood sixth after the first day of the state high school decathlon competition at Holt Memorial Field.

Burgess accumulated 3,167 points. Brad Culp of Fayetteville led with 3,519 points.

The Wampus Cats’ D.J. Alven was 25th.

In the girls hepthatlon competition, Vilonia’s Bayless Daves was 23rd and Lydia Gordon 24th after the first day. The Lady Eagles’ McKenzie Morris was 34th.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Hendrix College junior David Spriewald broke his school record in the decathlon at the North Central College Gregory Final Qualifier on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Marburg, Germany, native scored 5,801 points, placing fourth in the ten-event competition.

Spriewald recorded seasons bests in four events, including a second-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles in 16.08 seconds. He took fifth in the 400 meters in 52.76, seventh in the 1,500 meters in 5:06.11 and eighth in the pole vault by clearing 2.90 meters (9 ft.-6.25 in.).

Spriewald also placed second in the shot put at 11.23 meters (36 ft.-10.25 in.) and the javelin with a throw of 49.25 meters (161 ft.-7 in.). With a 100-meter dash of 11.59 seconds, Spriewald finished third. He was also fourth in the long jump at 6.12 meters (20 ft.-1 in.) and fourth in the discus at 33.32 meters (109 ft.-4 in.). Spriewald finished sixth in the high jump by clearing 1.66 meters (5 ft.-2.5 in.).

Hendrix College junior men’s lacrosse player Robert McCarthy was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character & Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 13, 2012.

McCarthy, who was also selected to the SCAC Men’s Lacrosse All-Sportsmanship Team, is a volunteer with HEAT (Hendrix Experience Ambassador Team), providing campus tours, overnight hosting and airport runs of potential Hendrix students for the admissions office. He also volunteers as a Peer Leader for the New Student Orientation program.

As a part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, McCarthy helped volunteer at the Special Olympics in Conway. He has also helped with Upward Basketball and teaching lacrosse at elementary schools in Little Rock and Conway.

In Texas, McCarthy has volunteered for Plano East Lacrosse and at the North Texas Combined Uniformed Service Academies Holiday Ball.
