Both the University of Central Arkansas men’s and women’s cross country teams have been named 2017 NCAA Division I All-Academic teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The UCA women’s cross country program had a 3.53 grade-point average, while the UCA men had a 3.25 GPA. Both programs are under the direction of head coach Richard Martin, along with associate head coach Beau Theriot and assistant coach John Jones.

 

UCA’s men’s squad tied its best finish in last fall’s Southland Conference championship with a fourth-place finish. The women’s squad finished seventh overall. The UCA men went on to finish 17th at the NCAA South Central Regional meet.

UCA's Morton honored for track

University of Central Arkansas junior Logan Morton has been named one of the Southland Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week.

Morton, from Cedarville, ., scored in two events last weekend at the Southern Illinois Don DeNoon Invitational in Carbondale, Ill., She finished third in the long jump among 33 competitors with a mark of 19-03.25, the best weekend jump in the SLC. Morton also registered an eighth-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 36-08.25.

UCA, which will send a small group of jumpers and sprinters to the University of Houston this weekend, will compete next as a full squad at the 2018 Southland Conference Championships on Feb. 21-22 at the Birmingham (Ala.) CrossPlex.

Hendrix Smith gets SAA honor

Hendrix's Preston Smith is the Southern Athletic Association's men's basketball Player of the Week.

The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced that Preston Smith has been named the SAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

For the week, Smith averaged 26.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game for the Warriors.

On the road all weekend, the Hendrix guard opened the Warriors' road trip with a 34-point output at Oglethorpe, Friday. In that game, he finished 10-of-20 from the field, which included a 9-for-18 effort from beyond the three-point line.

Two days later, Smith was key in a close 83-82 victory at Berry. The Hendrix student-athlete with 19 points.

CBC sets volleyball schedule

Coming off their first double-digit win season in six years, Central Baptist College volleyball head coach Shatel Gaines has released the  2018 schedule.

Along with American Midwest Conference opponents, CBC will play in three tournaments and renew some old Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference rivalries.

The season will begin on Aug. 21 when the Mustangs will travel to Bartlesville, Okla., to face former MCAC rival Oklahoma Wesleyan. Following the opener, CBC will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the two-day Faulkner University Invitational on Aug. 24-25. The road trip continues to Crowley’s Ridge , the Belhaven Classic and Arkansas-Pine Bluff then the Hendrix Invitational on Sept. 7-8.

The home opener will be on Sept. 10, a tri-match against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 2 p.m. and Wiley College at 6 p.m.

AMC play begins on Sept. 14 with a trip to Harris-Stowe State, followed by Missouri Baptist in St. Louis the following day.
