The University of Central Arkansas opened its softball season going 2-1 in the Mardi Gras Classic in a last-minute rescheduled event at Monroe, La.

The Bears were originally scheduled to play in the Sand Dollar Classic at Gulf Shores, Ala. They did not make the trip because of the prospect of inclement weather all weekend in Alabama. They were a late insertion in the Monroe tourney and faced Louisiana-Monroe and North Texas on Thursday and Grambling on Friday

Rio Sanchez, making her first collegiate appearance, retirwd the first six Grambling batters she faced before allowing a pair of walks in the third inning. She set dwn down the final seven batters that she faced to notch the 11th no-hitter in Central Arkansas softball history. UCA won, 10-0, in five innings.

That win occurred just nine hours after the Bears came from behind for a walkoff, 5-4, victory over North Texas.

Down to their final three outs against North Texas, UCA got a leadoff bunt single from Oakley Sisemore to open the inning. Morgan Felts reached on a bunt single and Sisemore scored and she advanced to third on a thowing error. Kayla Crutchmer legged out a bunt single of her own and stealing second base, before Kaylyn Shepherd drove in Felts with an RBI single to even things up at 4-4. Reagan Sperling then drove in Crutchmer with a walkoff sacrifice fly.

Tennessee-Martin (1-1) on the first game, 3-1.

 The Bears return to action next weekend, heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to participate in LSU’s Purple and Gold Challenge. The Bears will take on Oregon State, LSU, Southern Utah and Louisiana Tech.

 St. Joseph basketball

Bigelow edged St. Joseph's boys, 37-36, Thursday in the finals of the district tournament at the St. Joseph Family Activity Center.

Luke Pope led the Bulldogs with 13 pointss. Luke Bruich added 10, two assists and two steals. Christian Skinner had seven points and two steals. Gage Kordsmeier had five rebounds and Collin Coney, three.

Mayflower

At Rose Bud, Mayflower's junior girls defeated Bismarck, 46-12, in the district semifinals.

Bailey Francis led the team in scoring with 20 points. Kennedi Dawn added eight points and Mason Otts added seven.

Mayflower will play in the championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
