The Northwestern State Demons got a three-run home run in the eighth inning that carried them past the University of Central Arkansas Bears, 6-4, on Saturday in the Southland Conference series finale at Bear Stadium.
UCA (17-11, 9-3), which won the first two games had its eight-game SLC winning streak snapped. NSU is now 14-13 and 4-5.
The Bears turned a triple play _ the first in school history _ to get out of a ninth-inning jam. Senior third baseman Rigo Aguilar fielded a ground ball at the bag, threw to junior T.J. Black at second, who relayed over to Tyler Smith at first for the third out.
UCA then got one run back in the bottom of the ninth on senior Josh Somdecerff's fifth home run of the season, a solo line drive over the left-field wall.
But NSU's Jose Vasquez, after allowing a bunt base hit to Keaton Presley, closed out his 3 1/3 innings of relief with a fly ball out to end the game.
Somdecerff, LeBlanc and Presley all had two hits for the Bears, who finished with 11. The Demons had 11 hits off four UCA pitchers, including two each from David Fry, J.P. Lagreco and Kwan Atkins.
Friday, the Bears' Tanner Wiley pitched eight scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing six hits in a 3-0 victory. Mark Moyer got the save.
UCA plays at Little Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday and then hosts Houston Baptist in SLC play on the weekend.
At Natchiotoches, La., Saturday, Nicholls (24-10) defeated the UCA softball team (17-15), 5-0, to take over second place in the Southland Conference by winnings the three-game series, 2-1.
The Colonels' Megan Landry allowed the Bears four hits.
The teams split a Friday doubleheader with Nicholls winning, 2-1, and UCA taking the nightcap, 4-1.
UCA beach volleyball
UCA went 3-1 in the LSU Invitational beach volleyball tournament at Baton Rouge by splitting matches Saturday with No. 15 Arizona and Jacksonville State.
Ariizona won, 4-1, and the Sugar Bears downed Jacksonville State, 5-0.
Mackenzie Dear-Shelby Holmes Colene Hamilton-Kristine Hjembo, Delaney-Driver-MC Rogers, Jessica Martinez-Aly Brinkley and Haley Tippett-Megan Nash won matches against Jacksonville State (1-18). Kimberly Schnars and Stephanie Pollnow won the exhibition match.
Schnars and Pollnow won the exhibition match against Arizona (11-8). Martinez and Brinkley won the only point for UCA.
Central Baptist College (18-17, 9-10) swept Missouri Baptist (16-13, 8-5) in a doubleheader Friday at Victory Field at Conway Christian.
The Mustangs won the first game, 4-2, and the second, 9-5.
Ben Madison allowed three hits and struck out 10 in the first game. Jose Delmar picked up the win in the second game going six innings and striking out seven.
Friday, UCA defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-2, and Texas A&M-Kingsville, 4-1.
Dear-Holmes, Hamilton-Hjembo and Tippett Nash won matches against A&M-Corpus Christi. Pollnow and Schnars won the exhibition match.
