The University of Arkansas Bears won their fourth Southland Conference series of the season Sunday, beating the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 7-3 at Bear Stadium.
UCA (25-18, 13-8) got a three-hit day from senior third baseman Rigo Aguilar and a pair of RBI from junior second baseman T.J. Black to take the series 2-1 over the Islanders (21-24, 6-15).
Junior right-hander Cody Davenport went six and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out four to improve his record to 4-2.
Junior Conner Williams went two and one-thirds solid innings out of the bullpen, allowing no runs and striking out three.
The Bears struck first in the second inning when Aguilar singled to right field and went to third on Colby LeBlanc's base hit to right.
Both runners scored when Black poked a single up the middle to give the Bears an early 2-0 lead.
UCA got two more in the third inning, with the help of two of the Islanders' three errors on the day.
After the Islanders got two runs back in the top of the fourth, the Bears stretched their lead to 6-2 in the fifth on Josh Somdecerff's RBI double to the left-center gap and Aguilar followed with an RBI single up the middle.
UCA got one more run in the sixth on an RBI double to the left-field corern by Coby Potvin.
Both teams finished with 11 hits, with Aguilar going three for four with an RBI and a run scored.
Black finished two for three with two RBI and a run scored, while Potvin went two for three with an RBI and a run.
UCA will not play a mid-week game this week because of final exams.
The Bears return to SLC action next weekend at Abilene Christian.
Hendrix Track and Field
Hendrix's Kiersten Huitt broke a school record in the 100-meter hurdles to highlight the weekend at the Memphis Tiger Invitational.
Huitt led the Warriors' strong performances and in the 100-meter hurdles, she came in 12th place with a school record breaking time of 14.85 seconds.
Sam Byrd placed fifth (56.00) in the men's 400 meter hurdles.
Fellow teammate Marshall Nichol also finished in fifth place in the javelin with a mark of 50.40m.
Michael Spainhour would also led the men's squad coming in sixth place in the triple jump (13.42m) and eleventh in the 200 meter dash (22.31).
Leah Boehl added a ninth place finish in the women's javelin with a mark of 35.33m. Teammates Madelyn Klinkerman and Jaydan Hunt would come in 19th and 21st in the discus with a marks of 38.14m, and 37.01m respectively.
Huitt would also come in 25th in the women's long jump with a mark of 4.75m, and 41st in the 200-meter dash (27.70).
