William Woods University took a 4-1 win over Hendrix College in the softball season-opener behind a 12-strikeout performance from freshman MacKenzie Bowden. Senior Jaclyn Herrera pitched a complete game to lead the Warriors to an 8-4 win in the night cap on Saturday at Warrior Field.

Bowden faced 26 batters and allowed just one walk, while retiring 11 straight batters between the fourth and seventh innings. She scattered four hits in the game, two of which came in the first inning.

Sophomore Ashley Halbert suffered the loss in the opener. She gave up nine hits and two free passes and did not record a strikeout. Halbert allowed just one hit in the last three innings.

Herrera pitched a six-hit gem in the second game with three strikeouts and just one walk in 29 batters faced. The Mount Vernon, Texas, native also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

First year Alex Sullivan and senior Ellen Burr, as well as a two run single from junior Trace Grinnell.
