SEWANEE, Tenn. -— The Hendrix College volleyball team opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a pair of wins at the East/Central Divisional hosted by Sewanee on Saturday.

The Warriors (10-6, 2-0) swept Sewanee 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 then defeated Birmingham-Southern  25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18. 

Against the host Tigers (4-7, 0-1), the Warriors hit .333 with 37 kills and only seven attack errors. Hendrix also racked up eight aces and 46 digs.

Defensively, senior Libero Jennifer Youngblood registered 17 digs and sophomore Katie Burchfield added 14. Junior middle blocker Melissa Clement paced the offense with 15 kills and hit .565. Freshman outside hitter recorded eight kills and hit .444 and sophomore setter Zoe Calhoun had 31 assists.

Against the Panthers (6-10, 1-1), the Warriors posted a season-best 13 blocks to go with 65 digs, seven aces, 48 kills and a .264 hitting percentage.

Youngblood racked up 22 more digs and Burchfield had seven kills and 15 digs. Calhoun recorded 44 assists, five aces and four blocks. 

Sophomore Alyssa Jaksich had a career-high seven blocks to go with six kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Clement knocked down 18 kills and six blocks. Junior Katie Bates also had seven kills and five blocks.
