NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The University of Central Arkansas men’s and women’s cross country teams competed Monda at the Piney Woods Country Club in the 2011 SLC Pre-Conference Meet.The women competed in the eight-team 6k race, while the men ran an 8k with nine participating teams. UCA’s women earned fifth place with 140 points while the men finished seventh with 192 points.Courtney Efurd was the top Sugar Bear runner to finish the women’s race. Efurd, a junior from Rogers, came in 16th out of 59 runners with a time of 24:17.73. Freshman Stephanie Simpson was the second Sugar Bear to finish crossing the finish line 26th, with a time of 24:50.31. UCA was able to place one other runner in the top-30 as Elizabeth Craig ran the course in 25:07.74.Texas-San Antonio took home first place in the women’s 6K, finishing with 47 points. McNeese State (67 points) and Texas State (68 points) rounded out the top-three.Individually, Lauren Smith of Stephen F. Austin won the meet with a time of 21:34.25. Randi Plentl, also of SFA, finished third at 22:33.16. McNeese State placed two runners in the top-5 as Fionnuala Ross earned second place overall with a mark of 22:11.81 while Amy Talbot was fourth, clocking in at 22:37.63.The UCA men managed to place two runners in the top-50 of the 72 total participants. Amos Gerber was the top Bear finisher, recording a time of 27.42.20 — good enough for 28th place. Connor Ryan finished 42nd overall, owning a time of 28.39.97.Daniel Mutai of Louisiana Monroe was the day’s top-finisher with a time of 25:21.20. Xavier Rodriguez, running unattached, was second with a time of 25:36.53.UTSA also won the men’s race, placing two runners in the top-5, and finishing with a total of just 55 points. Stephen F. Austin was second with 59 and Texas State finished third with 85 points.UCA’s cross country teams will compete again this coming Saturday when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. for the Rhodes Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
