TYLER, Texas - Sophomore Collin Radack drove in three runs and freshman Matt Simmons hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to guide the Hendrix College baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Freed-Hardeman on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors (3-3) hit the Lions (2-3) for nine hits to close out the UT Tyler Clements Fluids Classic with a 2-1 record.
Simmons, from Bedford, Texas, hit his first collegiate home run over the right field fence in the eighth, which proved to be a needed insurance run for Hendrix.
Sophomore reliever Justin Moseby induced a ninth-inning groundout to secure the win for the Warriors.
Radack extended his nine-game hit streak, dating back to last year, with three hits and three RBI. Simmons had two hits and Clark Sims scored two runs, walked twice and stole two bases.
Senior Matt Diehl (1-0) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing four hits, five walks, an earned run and a strikeout. The Warriors received an excellent performance from their bullpen. Freshman Clanton Wood struck out two in a perfect inning and sophomore Tyler Keever struck out and allowed two hits in two scoreless innings. Moseby earned his first save of the year by pitching the ninth. FHU's Hunter Newby (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up eight hits, three runs, two walks and six strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
