The University of Central Arkansas tennis team went indoors Wednesday and surged to a 6-1 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith at Hendrix’s Mabee Center on Wedneaday.
The victory improved the Sugar Bears record to 3-4 on the season while the Lady Lions fell to 3-3.
UCA took five of six singles matches, winning No. 2-No. 6 singles. Kristina Horsikyan, Allison Hartman and Kazumi Otani all earned straight-set victories. Horsikyan downed Amy Belanger, 6-0, 6-2; Hartman defeated Masa Podunavac, 6-2, 6-2 and Otani got past Stanislava Haranova, 6-0, 6-1. Allison Murphy and Sasha Ruocco needed a third set to improve each of their singles records to 3-4 on the year. Murphy won 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 over Abby Whittemore and Ruocco ended the day with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Whitney Hobson.
In doubles action, the duo of K. Horsikyan and Ruocco improved their season record to 5-2 as they downed Harvanova and Podunavac, 8-6. Otani and Simona Horsikyan also won their match, giving UCA the doubles point. They defeated Belanger and Hobson, 8-4.
