GEORGETOWN, Texas — After suffering a 2-1 loss in the opener, the Hendrix College baseball team responded with an 11-0 victory over Southwestern University in the nightcap Saturday.
With the split, the Warriors, who have already secured the second seed from the West Division at next week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, uppped their record to 21-18 overall and 11-8 in league play. Hendrix is also one win away from tying the school record of 22 set in 2009.
Against the Pirates (11-26, 7-12) in game two, the Warriors put up a run each in the first, second and fourth innings. In the fifth, freshman Brady Newville recorded a two-run single andAaron Bowen had a RBI base hit, plating freshman Matt Simmons to go up 6-0.
Mark Vlaskamp had a run-scoring groundout in the eighth, scoring Bowen, who reached on a walk. The Warriors added four more runs in the ninth., including a a RBI-single from senior Matt Diehl, normally a pitcher, in his first career at bat.
Newville led the Warriors at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three driven in. Bowen was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two batted in and reached twice on hit by pitch. Clark Sims also drove in two runs and stole a base.
Freshman Cannon Schrank (1-2) earned his first career win, allowing one hit and two walks with two strikeouts over five innings. Freshman Clanton Wood and junior Tyler Keever combined for four innings of scoreless relief.
In the first game, Chris Webber (4-4) struck out six, allowing seven hits, one run and a walk in the complete game win.
Hendrix and Southwestern will wrap up the regular season at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
