The University of Central Arkansas Bears pounded out 13 hits and junior Jeffery Enloe struck out nine as the Bears downed the UTSA Roadrunners 8-4 in Southland Conference action on Friday night at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (17-21, 11-11) won their sixth consecutive home conference game as Jonathan Davis, Ethan Harris and Garrett Brown had three hits each off a pair of UTSA pitchers. Brown went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBI, while Davis and Harris were both 2 for 5 with 2 RBI each.
Enloe (4-5), a junior lefthander, went 7 1/3 innings, allowing just five hits and four earned runs. Senior Andy Steinmetz pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, holding the Roadrunners scoreless.
UTSA (18-24, 7-15) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Mike Warren’s RBI triple. The Bears answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again. Logan Moon doubled and moved to third on a ground out. Brown singled to center to score Moon and Davis singled up the middle to eventually score Kraig Kelley with the go-ahead run.
The Bears got two more in the fourth as Brown was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third when the catcher’s throw went into center field. Brown scored on Davis’ RBI base hit and Marchal made it 4-1, scoring on Harris’ ground ball up the middle.
Kelley had an RBI single in the fifth to score Travis Snider before the Roadrunners added a run in the sixth. UCA responded with two more in the seventh on Bryan Willson’s solo home run to left center, his third of the season, and Brown’s RBI single.
UCA’s final run came on another RBI single up the middle by Harris. Steinmetz ended it by striking out Casey Selsor for the final out. Selsor, UTSA’s starting pitcher and designated hitter, took the loss, dropping to 3-6 after allowing 5 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Moon also added two hits for the Bears, who improved to 13-6 at home this season.
Game 2 of the series is set for 4 p.m. Saturday.
