For the second straight night Wednesday, a University of Central Arkansas athletic team defeat an 18th-ranked team.
Kelsie Armstrong tossed a one-hitter, struck out eight and faced only one batter above the minimum as the Bears edged Tulsa, 1-0, in softball at Farris Field. Tuesday, the UCA baseball team defeated 18th-ranked Oklahoma State.
The Bears upped their record to 22-11 while Tulsa fell to 26-2-1.
Armstrong (15-7) engaged in a tight pitchers duel with the Golden Hurricane's Lacey Middlebrooks, who allowed the Bears only one hit. Aimee Cooper (13-2) relieved in the sixth and got into immediate trouble as UCA scored a run on two hits.
Two of the Bears' hits helped produce the decisive run in the bottom of the sixth. Stephanie Lasley led off with a single and stole second. Melissa Bryant reached on an infield hit, sending Lasley to third. Melanie Bryant walked. Then, Sarah Begej walked with the bases loaded to drive in the lone run of the game.
The Bears will begin a three-game series with Southland Conference leading McNeese State on Friday.
