University of Central Arkansas football coach Clint Conque, football player Seth Allison, basketball player Megan Herbert and multi-sport star Cristin Curl received major awards Tuesday night at the Bear Nation Celebration at the Farris Center.
About 300 coaches and athletes in all varsity sports, plus cheerleading and dance, were recognized during the dinner and award ceremony before about 300 of the major supporters and donors to UCA athletics.
Conque, who led the Bears to a 9-4 record and their first NCAA FCS playoff appearance in 2011, was named UCA Coach of the Year. The recipient was determined by the athletic staff based on seven performance criteria on and off the field.
Herbert, the Southland Conference women’s basketball Player of the Year, and Curl, who played volleyball, softball and soccer for the Bears, shared Female Student-Athlete of the Year honors.
Allison, the leading tackler on the football team who is now a graduate student, was named Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
Individual athlete award nominations came from players in each sport. The winners were selected by the coaching staff and athletic administration.
Teams with the top cumulative grade-point averages in male and female sports were also honored.
The men’s and women’s cross country teams were best in their respective divisions, the men with a 3.19 and the women at 3.43. Women’s soccer finished No. 2 and the soccer team was also second in GPA among the men.
Dr. Brad Teague, UCA’s athletic director, noted the cumulative GPA in all sports was 2.98.
The UCA cheerleaders were honored for a national championship. The small coed cheer team won a national championship at the NCA/NDA (National Cheer Association/National Dance Association) Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Carolyn Eidson was named Purple Circle Member of the Year.
