Central Baptist College’s softball team will begin play in the NAIA national tournament Thursday in the first round of pool play.
The Lady Mustangs (50-5) will play Morningside College of Iowa at 3:30 p.m. in pool play at Gulf Shores, Ala.
CBC, the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference champs, have won 50-plus games for the third year in a row.
Lee University and Reinhardt University are in CBC’s pool, which is one of eight in the national tournament, which has two phases.
"Our first goal is to get out of pool play," said CBC coach Jason Anderson, who led the Lady Mustangs to the National Christian College Athletic Association title in 2009. "If you win your pool, you’re one of eight teams in a double-elimination tournament for the national championship.
"Then, your strategy changes because you can afford a loss. You can’t afford a loss in pool play. If we can get to the final eight, anything can happen and I think we have the team that can do it."
The double-elimination part of the championships begins Monday.
