The Hendrix College football team’s first game in 53 years will take place on Sept. 7, 2013, when the Warriors host Westminster College at Young-Wise Stadium in Conway.
Under head coach Justin "Buck" Buchanan, Hendrix will reboot the football program that was dropped in 1960.
"We are excited about first football schedule since 1960," said Buchanan. "We are also happy to have a full schedule this first season, including six home games. It will be nice to play an extra game at home in order to allow our community an added opportunity to come out and support our Warriors."
The Warriors will play 10 games in 2013, including six on their home turf. After the opener against the Blue Jays, Hendrix will open Southern Athletic Association play on Sept. 14 at Birmingham-Southern College. The Warriors will return home on Sept. 28 for a non-conference contest with Southwestern University, which is also resurrecting their program for the first time since 1950.
After heading to Millsaps in Jackson, Miss., on Oct. 5, Hendrix will host back-to-back home games, starting with Washington University on Oct. 12. The Warriors’ first home conference game will be on Oct. 19 against Berry College, another upstart program. Hendrix will travel to Sherman, Texas, for a non-conference game at Austin College, then take on SAA foe Centre College in Danville, Ky., on Nov. 2.
The final two games of the year will be back at Young-Wise Stadium on Nov. 9 against Rhodes College and Nov. 16 versus Sewanee–The University of the South.
"One of the biggest advantages we have with the schedule is that we are setting our mostly freshman roster up for success in the classroom by not having to miss many classes," said Buchanan.
"We definitely value the time of our young men in the classroom because we want them to be playing as seniors and not just freshmen."
Hendrix’ last game was in November 1960 when it defeated Ouachita Baptist 7-6 in Arkadelphia, Ark.
