FAYETTEVILLE — Conway’s Wampus Cats had an amazing comeback fall short Wednesday in he first round of the 7A state boys tournament at Fayetteville High School.

Mitchell Smith, Van Buren’s 6-foot-8 freshman center, maneuvered for a three-point play with 20 seconds left and the Pointers added a free throw with 4.4 seconds left to give the Pointers a 52-49 victory, ending the Cats’ season at 16-11. A free throw by Justin Leon gave the Cats a 49-48 lead under 30 seconds before the three-point play. Conway was then whistled for an illegal pick, setting up Ryan Pearson’s clinching free throw.

The Cats trailed 30-16 at the half and 34-16 early in the third quarter before mounting a 15-0 run to make it a down-to-the-wire game. The score was tied five times in the last 4:00.

Tim Boyd ended his Conway career, leading the Cats with 19 points.
