Those who have followed the First Security Bank Battle at the Brier down through the years expect to see Vilonia’s teams in the semifinal rounds.

They are there again this time. The second round of the tournament is today, and the Vilonia Eagles and Lady Eagles have again advanced. But both face stiff challenges. It’s Cabot on the opposite end of the court in both semifinal games, and Cabot has strong teams this season.

The second round games on Monday at Greenbrier High’s Panther Pavilion:

Mills and Conway Christian boys, 10 a.m.

Mountain View and Beebe girls, 11:30 a.m.

Greenbrier and Sheridan boys, 1 p.m.

Greenbrier and Charleston girls, 2:30 p.m.

Cabot and Vilonia boys, 4 p.m.

Cabot and Vilonia girls, 5:30 p.m.

Beebe and Charleston boys, 7 p.m.

Conway Christian and Mountain Home girls, 8:30 p.m.

The Cabot-Vilonia girls game will match two of the top high school coaches in the state — Carla Crowder of Cabot and Alvin Riley of Vilonia. Crowder has Vilonia resident and veteran coach Charles Ruple as her assistant. Vilonia girls teams have made it to the Brier championship game for five consecutive years.

The other girls semifinal has defending Brier champion Conway Christian going against potent Mountain Home.

The boys semifinals, along with Vilonia against Cabot, have Beebe playing Charleston, with both teams impressive in Saturday’s action.

Today’s early games match the team that lost in the first round. Under the Battle at the Brier format, these will have to win today to get a third game in the tournament on Tuesday.

Battle at the Brier’s corporate sponsors are First Security Bank, the Log Cabin Democrat, Crain Automotive and Kestler Sports. First Security Bank will have a variety of halftime contests for fans at today’s tournament games.
