GREENBRIER — Cabot’s Lady Panthers had trouble getting into high gear, but they finally achieved it in the late going and defeated Vilonia’s Lady Eagles 50-47 in overtime Monday in the 11th First Security Bank Battle at the Brier.
Cabot, a solid tam using mostly juniors and sophomores, trailed by 10-2 early and didn’t get into the lead until 53 second were left in regulation play and Jaylin Bridges sank a 3-pointer.
Catherine Puckett responded for Vilonia with a basket with 15 seconds to go, putting the Lady Eagles up by 45-44. Then Elliot Taylor got down one of two free throws with 4 seconds left for Cabot, tying the game at 45-all
In the extra period, Taylor hit the only field goal. The Lady Panthers put in three free throws and Vilonia just two for the final scoring.
The game was a defensive one for both teams, and both regularly thrive on defense.
Cabot pressed Vilonia hard after the Lady Eagles opened with that eight-point lead. But Vilonia stayed ahead, making use of free throw opportunities in the second half when Cabot wouldn’t allow open shots from the field.
The victory put Cabot at 9-3 for the year and into the Battle at the Brier championship game tonight at 8:30. Vilonia dropped to 11-2 for the season.
Puckett led all scorers with 23 points. Lydia Gordon added 12 for Vilonia. Melissa Wolf scored 18 for Cabot, and Taylor had 13.
Greenbrier 51, Charleston 27
A strong start in the first quarter put Greenbrier in firm control of its consolation game, and the Lady Panthers took a 51-27 decision over the Charleston Lady Tigers.
Greenbrier was in front by 27-6 at the close of the first period.
Cicely New scored 18 points for Greenbrier, and Aundra Hardin had 9. For Charleston, Callie Fisher dropped in 12 points.
Mountain Home 52, Conway Christian 18
Mountain Home’s Lady Bombers had too much strength for defending champion Conway Christian and posted a 52-18 win to reach tonight’s finals.
Nicole Bolt hit for 23 points for Mountain Home. Christina DenHartog and Kelly Hays each scored seven for Conway Christian.
Mountain View 66, Beebe 48
Mountain View broke away from Beebe’s Lady Badgers in the third quarter and went on to a 66-48 win in consolation play.
Jessica Flanery scored 17 points for Mountain View, and Lakin Snow had 10. Jamie Jackson racked 23 points for Beebe.
