BREAKING NEWS
Dem. Party Chairman Killed
Bill Gwatney

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was fatally shot this morning at party headquarters in downtown Little Rock. Gwatney died of his injuries in a Little Rock hospital this afternoon.

The shooter was pursued by police from numerous agencies to the Sheridan city limits, where he was shot and killed by Arkansas State Police troopers. Though the shooter's identity has not been released, he is described as a 51 year-old male.

District 30 Sen. Gilbert Baker (R-Conway), chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said he was shocked, saddened and disappointed at the news.

"It's unbelievably shocking," Baker said. "I'm just praying for the Gwatney family. It's just beyond belief; a horribly sad, sad state of affairs."

Senate candidate Joe White (D-Conway) was devastated to hear news of the shooting and rumors that Gwatney had died.

Bill and Hillary Clinton issued the following joint statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

"I'm devastated; I can hardly talk," White said. "He was a long-time friend of mine, a caring, compassionate individual with strong convictions who worked hard every day.

"It's just senseless, senseless. He meant a lot to me and I talked to him and visited with him as late as Thursday. He was a visionary, always looking forward; a great guy. I can't say enough about him. He was a dear friend."

Gwatney finished a ten-year stint in the state senate in 2002. He was appointed chairman of the state Democratic Party by Gov. Mike Beebe after serving as finance chairman for Beebe's successful election campaign.

Bro. Mark and Ellie prepared a chili supper for the chuhrch members at Oakland last Saturday afternoon.

Bro. Mark can make good chili and it didn't even taste like armadillo. I think he told us that so we wouldn't eat so much.

Attendance was down some last Sunday, since the weather was so bad and we still had some sick people to.

Centerville

By KELLI PETERS

CENTERVILLE CORRESPONDENT

Several people in this community have been suffering from what is going around (including me). We extend our sympathy to all who are ill and especially to Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Skinner.

Be sure to mark these two dates on your calendar: First, Clestine and James Goodwin (former pastor of Centerville United Methodist Church) will be honored on March 29 for 50 years of preaching and pastoral ministry.

This celebration will be at 2 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church Family Life Center. Second, the Mercy River Boys are set for a concert at Centerville United Methodist Church on April 5, at 7 p.m. I will have more on this event as the date approaches.

Also, I'd like to add a reminder of the upcoming pancake breakfast sponsored by the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department that will be held on March 8, at the fire station at 22 Happy Valley Road, south off Highway 225, just east of McGintytown, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The firefighters would very much like to meet the members of the community. I hope you'll try to go. And I just realized that I omitted the date in last week's article my apologies.

I would also like to ask everyone to be in prayer for all of our brave men and women serving in the armed forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and all other places around the world. They are great Americans and we want them to know that we appreciate their service to this country. They are true patriots and they're certainly not forgotten!

Happy birthday, Michael!

If you have something you'd like for me to report, please e-mail me at kelli.findeverything@gmail.com or call me at 590-0791. Thank you so much.
