Smith steps down as Conway football coach
LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT
There will soon be a new head coach for the Conway High football team. After 18 years of service, Kenny Smith will step aside to accept other responsibilities in the Conway Public School District, according to school officials.

Smith finished his tenure with a 129-75 (63.2 percent) record with the Wampus Cats. He had coached in Conway for 25 years in all and won six conference championships, as well as played in the 1993 Class AAAAA state title game.

"No one bleeds Wampus Cat Blue any more than Coach Smith," Conway superintendent Greg Murry Said. "Our district and our community appreciate all that he has done to bring pride to our football program. We wish him the very best as he begins a new chapter in his professional career." The Cats have had their rough times in recent seasons, including a 2-8 record this past season. Conway, which has not made the state playoffs since 2006, also went 3-7 in 2007.

Murry said the district will immediately begin the process of finding a replacement for Smith.

McCollum's Column: There's plenty of fun stuff to check out in SCAC tournament

You'll see out-of-town visitors this weekend wearing multi-colored gear with unfamiliar names such as Stormy Petrels, Majors and Colonels. And you'll see a whole bunch of various kinds of Tigers.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, one of the biggest college events to ever hit Conway, begins today with first-round games at both Hendrix's Wellness and Athletic Center and St. Joseph Family Activities Center. The final two days will be at Grove Gymnasium.

It's Division III basketball, which means there are no athletic scholarships. But check it out, and you'll see a lot of fun things and better players than you think. It's old-fashioned, below-the-rim fundamental basketball for the most part and there are some teams in town with legitimate national championship prospects.

Can't beat the price either. There's no admission charge, just a requested donation of a canned good to the First United Methodist Church's food pantry.

Here are some interesting aspects to check out:

CENTRE COLLEGE MEN: Billed as the best team in Kentucky this season, the Colonels are a strong Division III national title contender with an unblemished conference regular-season mark and 23-1 overall record. They represented Division III basketball at its best.

DEPAUW/TRINITY WOMEN'S RIVALRY: Any confrontation between DePauw and Trinity, the top teams in the conference in all sports, is a dandy one. The women's basketball rivalry is at another level and each enters this year's tournament at the No. 1 team from their division. Either DePauw or Trinity leads the conference in 10 team statistical categories and they are one-two in three different categories, including scoring margin and scoring defense.

HENDRIX'S ANDREW KING: Hendrix's post man, the leading scorer and rebounder in the conference, attracts so much attention and so many defenders, he almost should be given an extra point for degree-of-difficulty of his shots.

DEPAUW PEP BAND: Since the tourney's beginning, it has been the official pep band and its rated as one of the best college pep bands in the nation. Members perform at every game of every sessions. The band learns all the SCAC schools' fight songs. They dress up in crazy costumes, they have a wide-ranging repertoire and they have a lot of fun with some crazy antics.

HENDRIX'S DANCE TEAM: It's a vibrant, energetic group of young women who have developed into one of the most entertaining groups around. You'll see different and creative costumes and some fast-paced routines. If they get together with DePauw's pep band, it could really be energizing.
