FAYETTEVILLE (AP) A man charged with capital murder after his former girlfriend was fatally stabbed pleaded not guilty Wednesday, a prosecutor said.
The charge against Zachariah Marcyniuk, 28, stemmed from the March 9 slaying of Katharine Wood, 24, a University of Arkansas student. Her body was found in a bathtub at her Fayetteville apartment.
Marcyniuk, who previously attended the school, was arrested in Oklahoma and returned to Arkansas on March 11.
Officers were called to the Colonial Arms Apartments by a resident who heard a woman screaming. When officers entered the apartment, they found Wood dead and evidence of a struggle.
Washington County Prosecutor John Threet said Marcyniuk appeared Wednesday before District Judge W.H. Taylor and entered the plea, without uttering another word. The case was assigned to Circuit Judge Bill Storey and a trial date was set for May 29.
Marcyniuk was returned to the Washington County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
