BREAKING NEWS
Dem. Party Chairman Killed
Bill Gwatney

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was fatally shot this morning at party headquarters in downtown Little Rock. Gwatney died of his injuries in a Little Rock hospital this afternoon.

The shooter was pursued by police from numerous agencies to the Sheridan city limits, where he was shot and killed by Arkansas State Police troopers. Though the shooter's identity has not been released, he is described as a 51 year-old male.

District 30 Sen. Gilbert Baker (R-Conway), chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said he was shocked, saddened and disappointed at the news.

"It's unbelievably shocking," Baker said. "I'm just praying for the Gwatney family. It's just beyond belief; a horribly sad, sad state of affairs."

Senate candidate Joe White (D-Conway) was devastated to hear news of the shooting and rumors that Gwatney had died.

Bill and Hillary Clinton issued the following joint statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

"I'm devastated; I can hardly talk," White said. "He was a long-time friend of mine, a caring, compassionate individual with strong convictions who worked hard every day.

"It's just senseless, senseless. He meant a lot to me and I talked to him and visited with him as late as Thursday. He was a visionary, always looking forward; a great guy. I can't say enough about him. He was a dear friend."

Gwatney finished a ten-year stint in the state senate in 2002. He was appointed chairman of the state Democratic Party by Gov. Mike Beebe after serving as finance chairman for Beebe's successful election campaign.

Centerville

I just have three words: Mercy. River. Boys!

Come hear the Mercy River Boys perform at Centerville United Methodist Church tonight at 7 p.m. It should be a great show! We will have a spaghetti dinner outside at 6: p.m. before the concert. We hope to have a really good crowd so bring your appetite and join us for a night of good food and uplifting Christian music! The public is invited and there is no charge for either the spaghetti dinner or the concert, though donations are welcome. These guys are top-notch and I hear they enjoy a large following; this is how good they are. So bring yourself, and all your friends and family.

Centerville Methodist is located at the intersection of Blythe and McNew Cemetery roads. It is about two miles east of Woolly Hollow State Park. From US Highway 65, turn east onto AR Highway 285 and go about eight miles. The church will be right in front of you. So, pack up the kids and bring the whole family. We hope to see you there!

I'm happy to report that the celebration held for Reverend and Mrs. James Winfred Goodwin last Saturday was a well-attended, happy event. There was a good crowd and the facility was very nicely decorated. About eight cakes were served to the attendees by the couple's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There were many loving tributes to both Winfred and Clestine; they were both very touched and blessed by the event. We pray that God continues to bless the Goodwins and their extended family.

If you have something you'd like for me to report, please email me at kelli.findeverything@gmail.com or call me at 590-0791. Thank you so much.

Services were good at Oakland last Sunday. The special music by the church duet was, "He Touched Me." This seemed appropriate since we've had so many sick people that are finally returning to church. Thank God for His healing touch.

We celebrated our granddaughter, Lori Ponders' birthday with lunch at our house last Sunday. John and Sherry came, ate and we toured the flood damage on Sunday afternoon at Mountain Home. It was hard to believe one of our favorite resturants, Jo Jo's Fish Warf, was so severely damaged. And the beautiful homes located on the White River lost all their contents.

My sister, Johnnie Sue and husband, Jim Johnston of Springfield, Mo., have been here visiting family. They visited his sisters in Conway, Allidean Yarboro and Alma Hean Simmons. Our sister, Mary Rith and husband Roy Montgomery at Greenbrier and Ray and I. Johnnie and Jim, Mary Ruth and Sherry had lunch with us Friday.

Helen Olles and Patsy Fuller of Conway visited Betty Applegate one day last week. Her granddaughters, Toni Pruitt and daughters, Brianne, Katybeth and Emily of Greenbrier visited her Sunday afternoon.

Sandra Cardin, Shaunna Shannon and sons, Brian and Brad and some friends from Greenbrier and Conway have returned home from a cruise in the Bahamas. They had a wonderful trip.

Donna and Danny Prince of Conway visited Rosa Lee and Robert McElroy last Sunday. Also, Tony Maham of Conway also visited them.

Attendance was also good at Holland Baptist Church with visitors for Sunday school and more for church. Cheyenne Brewer provided special music with a beautiful piano solo. She has really advanced in her ability to play. Brother Ron had to direct the musicc as well as preach. He did a wonderful job at both. The church feels blessed to have such a talented man leading.

Heavenly Huy hymnals were sung from for the fifth Sunday singing Sunday night. Brother Ron led with several ladies backing him. Cullum's piano playing is always appreciated.

The van ministry is about to start up again. It is hoped that many who can't get to church and Sunday School now will choose to let the van stop for them. Drivers and volunteers are appreciated in this effort to reach more people.

Lucille Purifoy continues to be blessed with beautiful cards and several visitors each week. Madeleine Paul, Hope WHite, Marilyn Colelasure, Jim Johnston and Larry and Carla White were her visitors last week.

Our Red Hat Society, Naylor Nightingales, visited KARK TV in Little Rock last Wednesday. It was interesting to have a guided tour of the facility and be on the Little Rock Today noon show and "dialing for dollars."

It was good to see L. J. and Joy Ransom back aat Oakland church last Sunday after L. J. had by-pass heart surgery recently.

Sandra Cardin gave her granddaughter, Katybeth Pruitt a birthday dinner at her home last Sunday. Those attending were: Betty Applegate, L. J. cardin, Shaunna Shannon and sons Brian and Brad, Walt and Toni Pruitt and daughters Breanne, Katybeth and Emily.

We don't have to be perfect for God to work in and through our lives.

Remember our military and their families when you pray.
