Arianna Meriweather and Sehr Shaikh, both Conway High School seniors, will have drawings included in the Junior Auxiliary Cookbook, "Simply Irresistible...Too." Both girls received $100 gift certificates to Target and thank you scrapbooks for their drawings, which was unveiled at Conway Regional Medical Center on Sunday.
"We couldn't decide on one, so we chose two" drawings," Beth Ann Shucky of Conway Junior Auxiliary said.
Both of the young artists submitted drawings to the cookbook as part of an assignment from their art instructor, Suzanne Kunkel.
"I like to get my students involved in community adventures," Kunkel said. Neither student had ever entered an art contest before and we're excited to be featured in the cookbook.
"I really like chocolate chip cookies," Meriweather said. Though she will not pursue a career in art she said, "I'm not really an artist, per se, but I thought this would be fun. I thought I had a good idea for a design." Meriweather said that the idea for her pencil drawing was a child's hand reaching for a cookie. She plans to attend the University of Tulsa when she graduates.
"She's very creative," Kunkel added.
Shaikh's pen and ink drawing features a child standing on a stool to help with cooking. "It was inspired by my grandmother," Shaikh said. "The stool was something that she had, and I would always help her cook." After deciding on her college of choice, Shaikh said she may consider majoring in art.
Students from Conway High School, Conway Christian and St. Joseph's submitted art to be included the cookbook commemorating the Junior Auxiliary's 50 year presence in Conway. Both drawings will be included in the cookbook that will come out in late summer.
"There's over 400 recipes in the cookbook," Shuckey said. "And the cookbook is going to highlight the 50 years of the auxiliary within the community. There's going to pictures in there of different members and events throughout the last 50 years."
Shuckey said the cookbook will include recipes from past and present members and said all recipes had been taste-tested. "The first cookbook we did was "Simply Irresistible," so there are some recipes from that original cookbook. And then people just turned in other recipes too."
To pre-order a copy of the Junior Auxiliary's "Simply Irrestible...Too" cookbook contact Beth Ann Shuckey of the Junior Auxiliary at 329-7589. Cookbooks will cost $29.95 each.
