JONESBORO (AP) Officials at Arkansas State University say improvements at the campus are readying the university for the next generation of students.
Over the past several years, the campus has opened a new student center and has begun a number of other projects.
ASU recently broke ground on an $18 million Recreation and Wellness Center, which will be built between Arkansas Hall and the Twin Towers dormitories.
"Hopefully in the next 90 days we'll award about $90 million in construction," ASU construction coordinator Terry Carty said.
The construction of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Health Sciences is under way. The Chickasaw building is being remodeled to accommodate the growing nursing program.
One of the biggest changes for the university campus is the demolition of the Twin Towers dormitory. Crews have begun preliminary work to a scheduled May implosion of the structure.
Another important change is coming to the traffic pattern at the campus.
"There's nobody who graduates from ASU that escapes getting caught by a train," Carty said.
Construction is to begin relatively soon on an overpass that will cross railroad tracks that have tied up traffic at ASU for decades.
