HENDRIX TRUSTEES DECIDE TO ADD FOOTBALL
After a 13-month study and debate, Hendrix College's board of trustees has decided to add football to the college's athletic program. Football was discontinued at Hendrix after the 1960 season because of costs. No timetable was set for football to be implemented, but trustees said the sport will only be implemented after start-up costs are raised from external sources. Trustees have also voted to add women's lacrosse with the same stipulation. Further details in Wednesday's editions of the Log Cabin Democrat.

SFA rallies past UCA in baseball

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks took a 10-8 baseball victory over the University of Central Arkansas on Sunday to take the weekend series 2-1.

The Lumberjacks (13-16, 3-8) led 6-2 after five innings but saw the Bears (13-19, 3-9) rally for the second consecutive day, only to come up short again. UCA scored five runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead but could not hold it.

The Bears scored five runs off four hits and an SFA error in the fifth and chased SFA freshman starter Jeremy Tamez, who has been solid to that point in his first start. Kent Taylor doubled with one out and scored on Chris Houk's double to left center field. Payton Seelinger reached on a throwing error by SFA shortstop Jeff Brewer, allowing Houk to score.

Scott Cline followed with a walk and pinch-hitter Eric Tennyson singled to right field to load the bases. Josh Huffman sent a single to right field that scored two runs before reliever Richard Folmer came on for the Lumberjacks. Kevin Rawls lined a sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch- runner Bobby Pritchett before Huffman was thrown out trying to steal third to end the inning.

SFA came back and re-took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. UCA answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning to close it to 9-8 on Houk's sacrifice fly that scored Chris Davis, who singled and stole second. The Lumberjacks put up one more insurance run in the eighth inning when Matt Whatley scored on a wild pitch.

Folmer (3-2), who got the victory with 3.2 innings of one-hit pitching, shut the Bears down in the final two innings, allowing only one baserunner.

UCA senior Matt Whitaker (2-3) took the loss with 4.1 innings of relief, despite striking out seven to increase his school career record to 235.

Davis led the UCA attack, going 2 for 5 and hitting his third home run of the season in the first inning. Kevin Crabtree had a pair of home runs and four RBI for the Lumberjacks.

UCA hosts UALR at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
