BREAKING NEWS
Dem. Party Chairman Killed
Bill Gwatney

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was fatally shot this morning at party headquarters in downtown Little Rock. Gwatney died of his injuries in a Little Rock hospital this afternoon.

The shooter was pursued by police from numerous agencies to the Sheridan city limits, where he was shot and killed by Arkansas State Police troopers. Though the shooter's identity has not been released, he is described as a 51 year-old male.

District 30 Sen. Gilbert Baker (R-Conway), chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said he was shocked, saddened and disappointed at the news.

"It's unbelievably shocking," Baker said. "I'm just praying for the Gwatney family. It's just beyond belief; a horribly sad, sad state of affairs."

Senate candidate Joe White (D-Conway) was devastated to hear news of the shooting and rumors that Gwatney had died.

Bill and Hillary Clinton issued the following joint statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

"I'm devastated; I can hardly talk," White said. "He was a long-time friend of mine, a caring, compassionate individual with strong convictions who worked hard every day.

"It's just senseless, senseless. He meant a lot to me and I talked to him and visited with him as late as Thursday. He was a visionary, always looking forward; a great guy. I can't say enough about him. He was a dear friend."

Gwatney finished a ten-year stint in the state senate in 2002. He was appointed chairman of the state Democratic Party by Gov. Mike Beebe after serving as finance chairman for Beebe's successful election campaign.

God has blessed us with a week of beautiful weather and just enough rain to give the gardens a good drink. Bill and I have ours all planted except for the okra and will wait a couple of weeks to do that. I am looking forward to the fresh produce, especially tomatoes.

Bill and I, Danny and Charlotte Roberts, Mike and Susan Cavin and George and Kristi Roberts kept the highway hot between Greenbrier and Beebe last weekend (Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoon) to watch Scott, Chase and Gavin play baseball. George, Kristi and boys had quite a surprise on their trip over on Saturday. A king snake decided to hitch a ride with them under the hood of the truck and made his appearance many times before they arrived. Unlike me, they stayed with the truck and didn't jump ship.

Carl, Karen, Whitney and Gale Garrison celebrated Carl's birthday Friday night with dinner at El Acapulco Restaurant in Conway. They had cake and ice cream later at home. Carl's birthday was Wednesday. Happy birthday Carl.

Gale Garrison attended the annual UCA All-Sports Banquet Monday night.

The Faulkner County Republican Committee held their annual Lincoln Day Dinner Tuesday night at UCA Attendance was about 300. Deena Burnett Bailey was the featured speaker. Her husband, Tom, was a passenger on United Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001. Deena now lives in Little Rock. She challenged the group to be of service to our country and others. Gale Garrison attended the event and spent the night with Joyce Nell Garrison in Conway. Jeff and Julie Riddle from the community also attended.

Recently, Joyce Nell and Gale Garrison went to Elkins and Fayetteville, AR to visit some cousins. They are Peggy Garrison Dauten and husband Chris, Linus and Ruby Garrison, and their son and daughter, Dennis Garrison and Anita and Mark Nuunja. The group met at Anita and Mark's house for a fish fry.

I forgot to mention last week that the annual McNew Cemetery cleanup will be held this morning as early as you can get there. If you go, please bring a rake, gloves, and any yard implements you can use to help with the cleanup. As always, there will be a cemetery association meeting after the cleanup.

If you would like to donate towards a new fence and refurbishment of the entry posts for the cemetery, please send your donation to the McNew Cemetery Association, 86 McNew Cemetery Road, Greenbrier, AR 72058.

If you have something you'd like for me to report, please email me at kelli.findeverything@gmail.com or call me at 590-0791. Thank you so much.

This week has been a beautiful week. If you have a secretary I hope he or she well. I had a great week. The drivers of the NLRS District Transportation Department surprised me with a brunch on Wednesday and waited on me hand and foot. It was really nice and thoughtful of them to do that. I also received a bouquet of roses and a bouquet of cut flowers, bath and body works and potpourri too.

I would like to apologize to Noreen Shultz, evidently I put the wrong information in the column last week. Her grandson left for service and his father lives in Guy and his mother lives in California. I tried to get in touch with her several times but never got an answer.

Last weekend Sue Phillips of Denver Colorado spent the weekend with her grandson Landon James Dowdy and his mother Dana Phillips and Jerry Dowdy in Conway. They had a cook out on Saturday night at Jerry's and Dana's and I went along with Janet Weaver and Daughter, Sidni and Sandy Dowdy. We had a great time! They played the wii game in bowling and had a great time. It was great to Sue again. Doris Watkins came too.

Don't forget the Mode Cemetery Clean up the first weekend on May 3. Bring your tools and come prepared to work. Remember our grandparents worked hard to have a place for them to rest in peace and for the future to do also.

If you don't have anything to do today go to the Fairbanks Auction Fish Fry and at the Fair Banks Community Center. All proceeds go to the Fairbanks Cemetery.

Pray for those that are in the military and those that are sick in the community. Don't forget to send me news at brendadowdyholt33@yahoo.com or call 679-3299.

Have a great week and remember to not drink and drive.
