Schools across Conway competed for the final event of the 2008 Crawl, Drag and Squirt Competition on Saturday.
Prior to the final event on Saturday the Conway Fire Department held 12 events at area elementary schools and Wal-Mart on Dave Ward, to give kids a break from their studies and a chance to race through a course designed to simulate obstacles that firefighters run as a part of their physical agility test.
Division Chief Brian Moix said that the Kids Crawl, Drag and Squirt is based on an adult competition called a firefighter challenge that used to take place in Conway. "All (the kid's) stuff is a scaled down version of what we do," Moix added. "(CFD) actually came up with the name: Kid's Crawl, Drag and Squirt, put together our version of the competition and it just evolved from that over the last 10 years."
On Saturday about 80 kids crawled through a tunnel to simulate crawling through a small space to rescue a victim. Then the students stood on a keiser sled and hammered a beam in the middle of the sled as fast as possible. Moix explained that keiser sleds are designed to simulate cutting a hole in a roof to get into a burning building.
After the sled, the kids ran through an obstacle of fire hydrants to a water hose that they aim at three targets. Finally, students raced to rescue their victim by dragging a dummy away from harm. Whoever finishes the race in the lowest time wins.
Kids from each elementary school compete in their school's competition to qualify for the final event held during Toad Suck Daze. "All the kids who make it to the finals at Toad Suck Daze win a medal," Moix added. At the final event trophies are awarded to the top three fasted boys and girls in three categories: kindergarten, first- and-second grade and third- and fourth-grades. At the final event, the school with the lowest time wins the Traveling Crawl, Drag and Squirt trophy.
"Except for a bad hair day, everything was great," Moix said of the windy Saturday afternoon. "It was great. We had a great crowd, a lot of people parents, kids, people at the festival. We had a great time."
