Vernon Franklin "Lefty" Powers, 89, of Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday. He was born Jan. 21, 1919, to the late Charlie H. and Cora Powers. His wife of 63 years, Lois; brothers, Jack and Charles Powers; and a sister, Hattie Sims, also preceded him in death.
"Lefty" was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church and a member of the Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge No. 736; and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was also an avid hunter and loved to fish the Arkansas River, but mostly he enjoyed traveling around to different functions with his cooker and cooking the fish for the events.
He is survived by daughters, Patsy Brewer and husband Daymon of Mount Vernon, Linda Cheek and husband Ben of Conway; his grandson, Terry Brewer and wife Reta; and great-granddaughter, Amanda Brewer, all of Conway; and a brother-in-law, Jake Sims of Greenbrier.
A funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with Charles Millsaps officiating.
Burial with full Masonic Rites followed in the Mount Vernon Cemetery with Ben Cheek, Daymon Brewer, Harold Baze, Terry Brewer, John Armstrong and David Warren serving as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Curtis Fulmer, Calvin Hawkins, Douglas Hawkins, Oscar Gray, Weldon Davis, Jake Sims, Rusty Noggle and Eddie Herndon.
Services were under the direction of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway, 327-7727.
