The Conway Advertising and Promotion Commission approved $4,000 in seed money for an amateur mixed martial arts fighting event to be held June 21 at the Hendrix Wellness and Athletic Center.
Justin Ratliff of Bonekrusher Entertainment told the commission he would spend the money on advertising, banners and T-shirts. Although the period for submitting applications for funding closed on Oct. 15, 2007, the commission voted to approve the request because Bonekrusher Entertainment was not in operation at that time.
The commission also voted not to consider a request from the Arkansas Cherokee Nation, which has existed for several years, because the organization missed the application deadline. Commissioner Andy Hawkins said the group was aware they would likely be turned down because they missed the deadline. The commission agreed the event in question, the Arkansas Cherokee Nation Pow Wow, was one that would likely bring many people to town and would be worth considering for A and P dollars in the future.
Wendy Holbrook, associate dean of students at the University of Central Arkansas, gave the commission a report on the End of the World Greek Show, for which the A and P provided funding this year. Holbrook thanked the commission for the funding, saying she mainly used it on advertising. She added she and students discovered free online marketing options, such as Facebook, were a way to reach many people, and she ended up with money left over. She said she would like to keep a Web site dedicated to the Greek show year-round.
Holbrook added the students faced difficulty finding venues for their after parties once the owners of the venues found out the party was for the End of the World. She said students found a location at a warehouse at a late date, and the college, police and fire departments worked quickly to ensure the facility was safe for the party.
In other business, the commission presented Chairman Monty Rowell with a plaque in appreciation of his eight years of service. He was one of the first members appointed to the commission when it was formed in 2000. He has served two four-year terms and is rolling off the board.
New members are Dale Bruns and Ray Kordsmeier. Another new member must be appointed to fill the position vacated by Peter Patel, who submitted his resignation after the April meeting.
