GREENBRIER Greenbrier's Stephanie Lasley is a multi-sport athlete, but she has chosen to focus on just one in college.
Lasley recently signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball for Arkansas Tech beginning next fall. Lasley said the decision was a tough one, but she followed her heart while making the sport of choice.
"Once I go to college then I'll be concentrating on one sport," Lasley said. "I think in college it'll be a little bit easier because I will be only playing one sport. I'll be able to get better at basketball because I will be concentrating on just that."
Steve Lasley, Stephanie's father, has coached and trained her since she was 3-. Steve Lasley currently coaches the Arkansas Young Guns, a 10-and-under girls softball team.
"Stephanie has always been very competitive, and second place is never good enough for her," Lasley said. "She's a winner, who loves to compete. I know that she has the confidence to succeed in whatever she does. I don't care if she's throwing a rock across the water, she's going to be competitive."
Lasley said her father has taught her many of the tricks of softball. She also noted that many of her close friends thought that she was an exceptional softball player. Steve Lasley, one of Stephanie's former coaches, would have liked to see her extend her college career in softball, but he is pleased with her decision.
"My dad is my No. 1 fan," the younger Lasley said. "He pushes me to the limit, and he has been very supportive of me whether I'm playing basketball or softball."
Lasley will be one of the cornerstones of Arkansas Tech's 2008 recruiting class. Tech women's basketball is known both regionally and nationally for having a strong Division II program.
"I'm looking forward to it," Lasley said. "I know some of the girls up there and don't know a whole lot of them. I went up there for some tryouts, and I had fun. I like it up there."
Lasley averaged 17.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in her senior season. She also hit 54 3-pointers and was named 5A-West all conference, all-state and was on the all-state tournament team. She said could take many things from her playing career at Greenbrier.
"I learned basketball was a team sport," Lasley said. "You can't do anything by yourself. All of us were able to come together and go to the (5A) state tournament."
