The University of Central Arkansas' men's and women's track teams are gearing up to compete in this weekend's Southland Conference Outdoor Championship meet.
Although UCA's track teams can not win a conference meet until the NCAA Division I provisional period ends in 2011, coach Richard Martin is looking for both squads to be competitive.
"They are not going to count any of our points, but our goal is to go out and put up our best times of the year," Martin said. "In track, you want to be able to peak or run the best times at the end of year. Everyone is going down there to put up some personal bests."
Martin said that the school's 4x100 and 4x400 teams are going to participate in the conference finals. The UCA men's 4x400 team made of Ceejoy Chew, Nick Miller, Kylon Boyd and Cameron Kinard has a good shot at a top finish. The other relays teams and athletes participating in individual events can only take part in the preliminary round.
The meet is hosted Huntsville, Texas on the campus of Sam Houston State. The meet is beginning Friday and it'll run through the weekend. The event finals are scheduled for Sunday.
Donavan Loring has put up impressive efforts for the Bears during the outdoor season. Two weeks ago at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, he finished first with leap of 14.93 meters in the triple jump. Last weekend at the Twilight Invitational in Little Rock, he placed second with a jump of 14.88. He went against some of the best competitors from the region at both track events, which included athletes from LSU, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas Tech, and other surrounding states. Matt Brozak is another top performer for the UCA men's team. He recently set the school's steeplechase record with a time of 10:18.94.
Lori Garside is a high-point member of the women's team. Two weeks ago against stiff competition at ULM, she placed second in the high jump with a mark of 1.60. Michelle Pitoniak set a school record in the steeplechase event with at time of 11:51.50 at ULM meet.
"We're looking to put up some good numbers," Martin said. "They have worked hard this season and many have improved on their times."
