LITTLE ROCK (AP) Arkansas letter carriers hope to pick up more than 400,000 pounds of food for the needy when they drop by to pick up mail Saturday.
Gov. Mike Beebe joined the Arkansas Foodbank Network and postal service workers Wednesday to kick off the 16th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. On Saturday, customers are asked to place non-perishable food next to their mailboxes before their letter carrier arrives.
The letter carrier will take the food to the post office where the donations will be sorted and delivered to a food bank or pantry.
David Anderson, president of the Association of Arkansas Letter Carriers, said last year 390,851 pounds of food were donated in the state through the program.
