Notice was received by military officials at Camp Pike from Maj. Gen. Johnson Hagood, commander of the Seventh Corps area, that the camp would serve as a base for the 12 civilian Conservation Corps camps to be established in Arkansas for forestry work.
J. W. "Uncle Billie" Firestone, 82, pioneer citizen of Conway, who made the brick for the first brick building erected in Conway, died at his home at Beryl. The first brick building here for which he supplied the brick was known as the Cole Building and was located on the corner of Main and Front streets. It was destroyed by fire many years ago, and the lot was occupied by the Harton Service Station. Mr. Firestone also supplied brick for nearly all the older brick homes in Conway. Survivors were his son and two daughters.

Seven Conway couples attended a convention of the Junior Chamber of Commerce at Hot Springs. They were Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Baldridge Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dooley, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gill, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wilcox, Mr. and Mrs. James Bryant, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bell and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Nabholz.
Mrs. Beatrice Thomas, public information officer for Arkansas Civil Defense, was installed as president of the Conway Business and Professional Women's Club. Other officers installed were Miss Ruby Neal Gawf, Mrs. Eloise Joynes, Miss Marie Enderlin, Mrs. Byron Griffith and Mrs. Jewel Lasley.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Ricard Jr. of Jennings, La., announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Suzanne Elizabeth, to Robert Bradley Banister, son of Dr. and Mrs. Bob G. Banister of Conway. Miss Richard was a graduate student in the School of Music at Loyola University in New Orleans, La., Mr. Banister was a stuent at Louisiana State University Dentral School in New Orleans. Vows would be exchanged June 23 in First Baptist Church of Jennings.
Six people from Conway were accepted as observers for the newly established Petit Jean International Art Song Festival to be held on Petit Jean Mountain. They were William M. Wilson, Rodney J. Wallace, Daniel J. Stanton, Virginia S. Evans, Virginia B. Drigers and Dorothy G. Swindle. The festival was sponsored by the University of Central Arkansas music department.

Students from Conway Senior High School were selected to be in the 1999 Faulkner County Youth Leadership Class. The students were Larry Atkinson, Kathy Bailey, Brett Creswell, Sarah DeBoard, Kristine Fox, Brooke Greenway, Erin Hengel, Harvel Howard, Nicole Keathley, Matt Kershaw, Erin Nelson, Kara Norton, Chelsa Painter, Shital Patel, April Rogers, Natalie Smeltzer, Emithly Smith, Amanda Thompson and Quantrell Willis. The FCLI program was in its fourth year. It was founded by the FCLI alumni donations.
