The competition, in its third year, was initiated in 2006 with a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage as part of Arkansas Heritage Month which is celebrated annually in May. The Faulkner County Historical Society and the Old Conway Preservation Society has sponsored the competition each year. Nancy Breeden Mitchell, Vivian Lawson Hogue, and Barbara Baker Satterfield, three Conway natives, are project coordinators.
Satterfield welcomed the attendees and recognized special guests, Marianne Welch, President of the Old Conway Preservation Society and Senator Gilbert Baker. During the awards ceremony, Mrs. Mitchell stated that the competition accomplishes several goals: it promotes an awareness and appreciation for the cultural heritage in Conway through the aesthetic beauty of the architecture of the historic homes as part of Arkansas' history; it creates a successful Arkansas Heritage Month program with is centered upon the artistic expression of our community's children; it familiarizes the public with the importance of historic preservation in the community; it promotes an interest in the arts; and makes the community aware of the existence of the Baum Gallery of Fine Arts as a site for future family art gallery excursions.
Mitchell, who also serves as Vice President of the Old Conway Preservation Society, mentioned several historic preservation efforts which have taken place in Conway this past year. The Frauenthal Estate on Western Avenue, recently renovated by Conway Regional Medical Center, now serves as the public relations and marketing department offices for the medical center. The Dave Ward Mansion, having undergone extensive renovations, became the first Conway Symphony Designer Home and now serves the community as the Ward Mansion Bed and Breakfast. The historic Halter Building's has an updated exterior and completely new interior. Fletcher Smith Jewelry and Michelangelo's Italian Restaurant have taken up residence there. "Downtown Conway is a buzz with renovation projects from one end of the historic downtown district to the other. It is exciting to see these positive changes taking place!"
The student artwork was on display in a rotating exhibit at the main Bank of American on Harkrider Street through May 14.
