BREAKING NEWS
Dem. Party Chairman Killed
Bill Gwatney

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was fatally shot this morning at party headquarters in downtown Little Rock. Gwatney died of his injuries in a Little Rock hospital this afternoon.

The shooter was pursued by police from numerous agencies to the Sheridan city limits, where he was shot and killed by Arkansas State Police troopers. Though the shooter's identity has not been released, he is described as a 51 year-old male.

District 30 Sen. Gilbert Baker (R-Conway), chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said he was shocked, saddened and disappointed at the news.

"It's unbelievably shocking," Baker said. "I'm just praying for the Gwatney family. It's just beyond belief; a horribly sad, sad state of affairs."

Senate candidate Joe White (D-Conway) was devastated to hear news of the shooting and rumors that Gwatney had died.

Bill and Hillary Clinton issued the following joint statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

"I'm devastated; I can hardly talk," White said. "He was a long-time friend of mine, a caring, compassionate individual with strong convictions who worked hard every day.

"It's just senseless, senseless. He meant a lot to me and I talked to him and visited with him as late as Thursday. He was a visionary, always looking forward; a great guy. I can't say enough about him. He was a dear friend."

Gwatney finished a ten-year stint in the state senate in 2002. He was appointed chairman of the state Democratic Party by Gov. Mike Beebe after serving as finance chairman for Beebe's successful election campaign.

Baum Gallery hosts Art in Architecture show

The Baum Gallery of Fine Arts on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas was the site of the "Art in Architecture: Historic Homes of Conway" opening exhibit and awards ceremony which took place on May 4. Guests were greeted with music provided by Alec Brown on cello and Irish whistle and Cory Winters on violin.

During the awards ceremony, the students with winning entries were presented with certificates of achievement and place ribbons. Participating teachers from Conway and Faulkner County schools were recognized for their work with the students and presented with gift certificates from local area restaurants (Mike's Place, Michelangelo's Italian Restaurant, Something Brewing, Stoby's , Chili's Restaurant, and Ruby Tuesday).

Participating teachers were Becky Thornton, Carl Stuart Middle School; Nancy Fesler and Vivian Hogue, Conway High School East; Suzanne Kunkel, Conway High School West; Renee Thrash, Ellen Smith Elementary; Beverly Isacksen, Florence Mattison Elementary; Kristy Green, Ida Burns Elementary; Stacy Hammons, Jim Stone Elementary; William Fisher, Julia Lee Moore Elementary; Lori Cullum, Marguerite Vann Elementary; and Sally Allinder, Theodore Jones Elementary; Penny Bassham and Patricia McCauley, St. Joseph Catholic Schools; Sondra Daniel, Conway Christian Schools; Betty Yarbourough, Greenbrier Westside Elementary; Joe King and Karen Hall, Greenbrier Middle School; Stephanie Corder, Greenbrier Junior High; Lisa Foster, Greenbrier High School; Cindy Johnson, Guy-Perkins Elementary; Nanette Nichols, Mt. Vernon-Enola High; and Jo Claire Dodson, The Art School.

The competition, in its third year, was initiated in 2006 with a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage as part of Arkansas Heritage Month which is celebrated annually in May. The Faulkner County Historical Society and the Old Conway Preservation Society has sponsored the competition each year. Nancy Breeden Mitchell, Vivian Lawson Hogue, and Barbara Baker Satterfield, three Conway natives, are project coordinators.

Satterfield welcomed the attendees and recognized special guests, Marianne Welch, President of the Old Conway Preservation Society and Senator Gilbert Baker. During the awards ceremony, Mrs. Mitchell stated that the competition accomplishes several goals: it promotes an awareness and appreciation for the cultural heritage in Conway through the aesthetic beauty of the architecture of the historic homes as part of Arkansas' history; it creates a successful Arkansas Heritage Month program with is centered upon the artistic expression of our community's children; it familiarizes the public with the importance of historic preservation in the community; it promotes an interest in the arts; and makes the community aware of the existence of the Baum Gallery of Fine Arts as a site for future family art gallery excursions.

Mitchell, who also serves as Vice President of the Old Conway Preservation Society, mentioned several historic preservation efforts which have taken place in Conway this past year. The Frauenthal Estate on Western Avenue, recently renovated by Conway Regional Medical Center, now serves as the public relations and marketing department offices for the medical center. The Dave Ward Mansion, having undergone extensive renovations, became the first Conway Symphony Designer Home and now serves the community as the Ward Mansion Bed and Breakfast. The historic Halter Building's has an updated exterior and completely new interior. Fletcher Smith Jewelry and Michelangelo's Italian Restaurant have taken up residence there. "Downtown Conway is a buzz with renovation projects from one end of the historic downtown district to the other. It is exciting to see these positive changes taking place!"

The student artwork was on display in a rotating exhibit at the main Bank of American on Harkrider Street through May 14.
