BREAKING NEWS
UCA board to meet, discuss Hardin's future
LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT

The University of Central Arkansas Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting today to discuss president Lu Hardin's future with the university.

The meeting will take place at 11 a.m., and Rush F. Harding III, vice chairman of the board, told the Associated Press that Hardin offering his resignation may be one of the university president's options.

Vice president for university communications Warwick Sabin said he hasn't heard of any plans for Hardin to resign and said he has not been able to confirm the 11 a.m. meeting of the Board of Trustees as of 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"I'm confident the president has the votes to stay, if he would choose," Harding said. "However, I know the president cares deeply about the institution and he's assured me that he wants some resolution to this issue and he will put the interest of the university above his own."

The controversy began when it was reported that Hardin secretly received a $300,000 deferred-compensation bonus in May. Hardin has since repaid the money and said he would not accept it until faculty members receive salary increases and enough private funds are acquired to cover the early payment of deferred-compensation.

Hardin first said the money used to pay the bonus was private funds, but Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said in an advisory opinion that the money used to pay the bonus was public money because it came from student book and food sales.

A memo later surfaced that had been distributed at the May 2 meeting with typed names of three university vice presidents containing talking points that would encourage Hardin to stay at the university. Among the talking points were suggestions to accelerate the payment of the $300,000 deferred-compensation, as well as a new $150,000 per year deferred-compensation package. All three vice presidents denied authoring, or seeing, the document before it was distributed, and none agree with every suggestion included on the memo.

"The board is having a meeting (Thursday) to sit down with the president and figure out how to get this behind us," Harding told the Associated Press Wednesday.

The university Faculty Senate met last week where faculty addressed concerns about Hardin and the administration. A Faculty Affairs Committee was to review and deliberate the facts considering Hardin's bonus and, if they feel action is necessary, recommend it to the senate. Faculty senator Ed Powers was selected to chair the committee.

A vote of confidence and a request for Hardin's resignation are two of the options Powers said the committee could suggest to the senate. A closed meeting of the committee was scheduled to take place today.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Wow. What a beautiful day it was for Mother's Day. I hope everyone had a great day. Mine was perfect got to spend time with my Mom and family and time with my grandson Landon for his first Mother's Day with his mommy.

We painted Mom's living room for her for Mother's Day. When I say we, I mean Doris Watkins, Jerry Dowdy, Gary Griffith, Sandy Dowdy of Conway and Carolyn and Brianna Hays of Sardis all came up on Saturday, and we painted all say Saturday and finished it up on Sunday morning. We painted her dark paneling white. Wow what a difference that made in her living room. It looks great. After we put the second coat on the walls Sunday we all went over to Johnny Dowdy's, and he cooked Mother's Day dinner for all of us. He fried catfish, french fries with coleslaw. It was great. Doris brought a strawberry cake and I brought peanut butter cookies for desert. What more could you ask for on Mother's Day? Thanks, Johnny, for cooking and it was really good.

Congratulations to Bailey Kerr for coming in as the 1st alternate in the District Competition in Ferndale for the poultry barbecue. She represented Faulkner County 4-H. This was the second year that Baily had entered and every time she gets better and better. Keep up the good work Bailey may be some day you will open up Bailey's BBQ in Guy.

Everyone is invited to the Youth Rodeo on May 24, at the Kerr Arena. Come out and have some clean good fun.

Please keep the following people in your prayers, Till Thorn, Trish Thorn, Belle Womack, Noreen Acre, Gene Glover and any one else in the community that is sick or has been sick. Let's not forget our military that are gone off to war and those that are still here and their families too.

Also pray for those that had damage in the recent tornadoes. Here is a tid bit for those victims. I learned this when my house burned several years ago. A friend of mine called me and told me this: If you have pictures that are wet you can save them by doing this. First don't pull apart if they are stuck to gether this would work for important papers too. Put those pictures in a plastic bag and place in your freezer and let them freeze leave for a day or two and then get them out and they will pull apart and your pictures will be saved. This really works as you know my house didn't burn to the ground but had burned and lots of water damage and was totaled. We had just had glamour pictures taken and they were on the bar and that was where the main fire was and damage and we found the pictures in the ruble under neath the roof that had caved in and we saved those pictures and other pictures too. It was great.

I picked up Landon last Tuesday afternoon at day care for his mom because she had to work late, and Jerry was out of town on a business trip. When I walked in and spoke his name it was a great thrill to see him light up and grin. Grandbabies are so much fun. I didn't realize what I have been missing and they grow up so fast. While keeping him I discovered he had cut his first tooth.

I appreciate those of you that send me news, but I can't put news in the column about the community if I don't hear from you. I know this is a busy time of the year for everyone. School is coming close to being out, and I know the classes are going on those end of the year field trips now come on teachers let me hear from you so that we can tell where your classes are going and how much fun they had. Send your news to brendadowdyholt33@yahoo.com.

Bessie and Darrell Bearden kept their grandchildren Ryan and Paige one afternoon last week. Paige and Ryan were having fun out playing in the yard. Paige wanted to pick all of Bessie's flowers.

Are you ready for summer? Are you planning a vacation? With the high gas prices, it looks like a lot of people will be staying close to home. I know the gas prices are eating a whole in my purse strings and I would be interested in starting a car pool to North Little Rock and Little Rock Area if any one is interested. The oil people are making a killing off of us common, normal, middle class people. Something has to give we can't survive at these high cost.

Just wanted to let you know the Guy Small Town 4-H Club is hosting a Youth Rodeo at 6 p.m. May 31 Hope everyone can come out and join us to support the youth. It will be a night of family fun.

On May 31, at 6 p.m. the Guy Small Town 4-H will host a youth rodeo. The event will be held at the Circle K Arena in Guy. There will be events for both horse riders or running boots. We also will have a few old timer's events for those that can still Cowboy Up. Members will be collecting non-perishables at the gate for $1 off admission. Canned goods will be donated to Bethlehem House.

Proceeds from rodeo will benefit members attending various camps this summer. Bring your lawnchairs and enjoy a night of family fun while supporting our youth.

Have a great week and remember please don't drink and drive.
