BREAKING NEWS
Dem. Party Chairman Killed
Bill Gwatney

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was fatally shot this morning at party headquarters in downtown Little Rock. Gwatney died of his injuries in a Little Rock hospital this afternoon.

The shooter was pursued by police from numerous agencies to the Sheridan city limits, where he was shot and killed by Arkansas State Police troopers. Though the shooter's identity has not been released, he is described as a 51 year-old male.

District 30 Sen. Gilbert Baker (R-Conway), chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said he was shocked, saddened and disappointed at the news.

"It's unbelievably shocking," Baker said. "I'm just praying for the Gwatney family. It's just beyond belief; a horribly sad, sad state of affairs."

Senate candidate Joe White (D-Conway) was devastated to hear news of the shooting and rumors that Gwatney had died.

Bill and Hillary Clinton issued the following joint statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

"I'm devastated; I can hardly talk," White said. "He was a long-time friend of mine, a caring, compassionate individual with strong convictions who worked hard every day.

"It's just senseless, senseless. He meant a lot to me and I talked to him and visited with him as late as Thursday. He was a visionary, always looking forward; a great guy. I can't say enough about him. He was a dear friend."

Gwatney finished a ten-year stint in the state senate in 2002. He was appointed chairman of the state Democratic Party by Gov. Mike Beebe after serving as finance chairman for Beebe's successful election campaign.

2 die, others injured in Florida wreck

Two Conway residents died and five were injured Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 10 near Chattahoochee, Fla.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Lucy Bolton, age unavailable as of presstime, and Ron Elmore, 22, were pronounced dead at the scene. Kali Sparks, 20, Sarah White, 21, Tyler Bass, 24, Dottie French, 21, and Ashley Spencer, 20, were also involved in the accident.

According to a representative from Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Hospital, Bass, Sparks and White were listed in critical condition. Both French and Spencer were listed in stable condition as of presstime Wednesday.

According to the report filed with the Florida Highway Patrol, all seven occupants were in an SUV traveling east when the vehicle "traveled off the roadway into the north shoulder. (The SUV) began to overturn and six of the seven occupants were unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. Two of the occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene."

General manager of MarketPlace Grill Andy Williams said six of the people in the vehicle were employees of the restaurant.

"We're just praying for their families," Williams said. "These were some of the most well-liked, long-term employees at MarketPlace. They're going to be missed and we are just praying for their families."

Hostess Stephanie Dunn said that the group was on vacation and was traveling Disney World at Orlando.

"They lived here, but not all of them were from here," Dunn said. She said that most of them were students and Bolton was a manager. "We're pretty much a big family."

Employees of MarketPlace set up a memorial in the lobby of the restaurant with a sign reading, "MarketPlace Grill has suffered a tragic loss to its family. Seven people from our family were in a serious auto accident and some were killed. In loving memory of MarketPlace Family. May 21, 2008. Please pray for us." Flowers laid in the floor before the black sign with candles lit on either side.

The Jackson County Floridian newspaper contributed to this report.
