Mike Johnson is no stranger to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
In fact, he's been a member since 1982 and has won nearly $2 million along the way. Friday night was his first time to compete in Conway, as many cowboys and cowgirls from across the country gathered for the PRCA rodeo sponsored by the Log Cabin Democrat at the Don Owen Sports Complex.
Johnson, currently ranked No. 2 in the world in tie-down roping, posted a time of 9.5 seconds Friday night. That was bested by Zeb Chapman of Lafayette, Ga., who had a time of 8.0 seconds.
That's not too bad for a newbie his horse, that is.
"This was his first time away from home," Johnson said of his four-legged partner. "It's like taking a freshman to compete against a group of seniors."
Still, Johnson said his time wasn't too bad all things considered. Besides, he's enjoyed his visit to Faulkner County.
"I hope this rodeo continues," Johnson said. "There's a lot of talented PRCA cowboys in central Arkansas. The cattle here's great. That all makes for a good show."
From 1983-1995, Johnson held a world ranking every year. In 2004, he finished sixth in the world. Nowadays challenges come in different ways than just what's in the arena.
"Finances are a big challenge these days, especially with the cost of fuel prices," Johnson said. "Everyone has to be their own agent and travel agent. You also have to keep your horse maintained and then take care of yourself. That's probably the order that's best to go in."
Some would consider Johnson a legend on the rodeo circuit. He said he's just glad to have the opportunity to participate.
"I love to compete and travel," Johnson said. "That's two key ingredients. Conway's just three hours from my home, so that made it easy."
Johnson has traveled and competed quite a bit during his career. Whether it's tie-down roping or team roping, Johnson has been to many a rodeo.
Friday night was a time to let someone else in on the experience, as well.
"It was a chance to take my new horse and get him some experience," Johnson said.
Johnson's already won a couple of rodeos this year. He won the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo in Odessa, Texas and was a co-champion at the Ramona (Calif.) Rodeo. Only time will tell how long this legend will last.
