BREAKING NEWS
Dem. Party Chairman Killed
Bill Gwatney

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was fatally shot this morning at party headquarters in downtown Little Rock. Gwatney died of his injuries in a Little Rock hospital this afternoon.

The shooter was pursued by police from numerous agencies to the Sheridan city limits, where he was shot and killed by Arkansas State Police troopers. Though the shooter's identity has not been released, he is described as a 51 year-old male.

District 30 Sen. Gilbert Baker (R-Conway), chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said he was shocked, saddened and disappointed at the news.

"It's unbelievably shocking," Baker said. "I'm just praying for the Gwatney family. It's just beyond belief; a horribly sad, sad state of affairs."

Senate candidate Joe White (D-Conway) was devastated to hear news of the shooting and rumors that Gwatney had died.

Bill and Hillary Clinton issued the following joint statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

"I'm devastated; I can hardly talk," White said. "He was a long-time friend of mine, a caring, compassionate individual with strong convictions who worked hard every day.

"It's just senseless, senseless. He meant a lot to me and I talked to him and visited with him as late as Thursday. He was a visionary, always looking forward; a great guy. I can't say enough about him. He was a dear friend."

Gwatney finished a ten-year stint in the state senate in 2002. He was appointed chairman of the state Democratic Party by Gov. Mike Beebe after serving as finance chairman for Beebe's successful election campaign.

Rea vaulting her way to success

When it comes to pole vaulting, Conway High's McKinley Rea wants perfection.

The student-athlete just finished her junior year this spring and was a big asset to the Lady Cats' track program throughout. Rea won both the 7A-Central Conference and 7A state meets in the pole vault event. She also finished second in the Meet of Champs behind Lake Hamilton's Stephanie Foreman, who set a state record that day.

"I'm glad that I've been able to improve throughout the year," Rea said. "My pole vaulting coach Morry Sanders has taught me the proper techniques in which to jump. Every Sunday, I go to Mount Ida and practice with him, along with others, including Stephanie Foreman. He has helped improved my jumps."

Rea recently qualified for the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. To qualify, she had to at least clear a 12-foot mark at a USATF sanctioned event. Both McKinley and Foreman will represent the Arkansas Vault Club at nationals.

"She is a very hard worker, and I'm sure (Conway coach J.R.) Ross can vouch for that," said father Shawn Rea. "My wife and I are very proud of her. During track season, she's at the pit practicing at 6:30 in the morning. Some mornings we had to go out there and chip ice off the pit because she wanted to practice."

Rea was a member of Conway's state championship 4x100 team. She also ran the 100 and 4x400 relay team.

"We had a really good year, and I enjoyed running with those girls," Rea said. "It was fun running in conference, state and in the Meet of Champs. That was a great experience. We should be good next year on the relays also because we have most of our girls coming back."

According to Shawn Rea, his daughter is receiving interest from colleges not only in pole vault but also in sprints.

"She does really well academically," Rea said. "She has all A's and B's during the school year, and she was able to keep a job working at Sonshine Academy. We're very proud of her."
