The Arkansas Educational Television Network has taken its popular Kids Computer Academy on the road for the first time this summer by hosting a session at Centerpoint High School in Amity.

The weeklong camp, held June 9-13, attracted 29 students in third through fifth grades and was made possible by funding from the Olds Foundation. "AETN has again stepped up to its mission to educate and enrich the lives of Arkansans," AETN Commissioner Sammie Benjamin of Glenwood, who helped arrange for this first satellite camp, said.

"It has been inspiring to watch the AETN staff work with these kids and help them understand and enjoy technology."

Teachers from the Kirby and Centerpoint school districts, along with AETN staff, served as coaches to introduce the students to Word commands, Paint Shop, Internet navigation and safety, search engines, e-mail, attachments, PowerPoint, Front Page, hyperlinks and video production. In addition to technology sessions, the students had small group time and participated in lively discussions focused on positive character and issues affecting the school and community.

"Our goal is to try and reach as many children as we can in Arkansas and help them hone positive skills that will benefit them in school and in life," AETN Deputy Director for Education and Governmental Affairs Kathleen Branton said.

AETN will host additional Kids Computer Academy sessions at the network headquarters in Conway June 23-27 and July 14-18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Each day will include lab lessons, activities, breaks and lesson reviews. An Arkansas certified teacher and assistants will provide individual attention and instruction. AETN's state-of-the-art training facilities will enable children to take a hands-on approach to learning.
